ADD Treatment--To Control or Empower

ADD proponents have focused most of their attention on developing ways to externally control the behavior of children, when what these kids really need are adults who will internally empower them (the "respect, listen, collaborate, and problem-solve" approach). —Thomas Armstrong, PhD

Children labeled ADD are almost always children caught in a conflict between their behavior and the expectations of parents and teachers. Though these conflicts are likely to be labeled disciplinary problems--and focus on the child's failings--they are, in reality, conflicts between adults and children. Resentment and rebellion are often driven by a sense of being treated unfairly. Respectful relationship, honoring the essential goodness in each child, is key to resolving these problems. The best solutions lie in conflict resolution based on love and mutual concern, sound reason, and ethics, instead of punishment or behavior control.

Children will respond in startling and gratifying ways when we greet them as people to be treasured in their lives. —Peter R. Breggin, MD
