National "Love Your Body Day"
Since 1999, the National Organization for Women (NOW) has sponsored a national Love Your Body Day, highlighting the need to speak out and raise people's awareness about the many ways in which ads and images of women are offensive, harmful, and disrespectful. This creative program suggests numerous activities that encourage self-appreciation as well as ways that schools, organizations, groups, and individuals can take action in this regard.
Although this event is essentially about women's bodies, men can certainly profit by applying the same types of awareness and action against the exploitation and disrespect of men's bodies. Since body image is an important factor in self-esteem, and self-esteem is an important factor in health, the subject of loving and honoring the body is a core issue for everyone.
