Yoga Postures

Anusara yoga, like the other forms, consists of a series of physical postures or poses (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) that are easily learned and yet may have dramatic effects. Regular practice increases flexibility, strength, balance, grace, breath control, endurance, and overall health and integration. The exercises provide special stimulation of the endocrine glands and thus promote a rebalancing of vital energy throughout the body. Many people experience a greater serenity about life in general, improved circulation, a firmer, trimmer figure, and less illness.

In doing most forms of yoga, you are advised to move slowly and with concentrated awareness, to avoid strain or pain, and to coordinate your breath with your movements. Yoga exercises can be done almost anywhere. It helps to wear loose clothing to make stretching easier, and to have a mat or cloth under you, something that marks this spot as your yoga practice space. You can teach it to yourself simply by following a book or set of instructions, although a trained teacher is highly recommended, especially as you advance into more difficult postures. You can begin this very minute without leaving your chair. Interested? Try this one, it's called the Lion.

Inhale deeply; then forcefully exhale through your mouth. While exhaling with mouth wide open and eyes wide and staring, thrust out your tongue and stretch your arms down with fingers stiff and spread tautly apart. Hold the breath for a few seconds. Then close your mouth and inhale deeply through the nostrils (expanding the abdomen). Exhale again slowly through your nostrils and relax. Repeat three times.
